The first extended trailer for AT&T Audience Network’s anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes is finally here.

Based on King’s 2014 best-selling hard-boiled detective novel, the new series is a throwback to the hard-boiled detective stories of the 1920s and 30s, where violence and corruption often rendered our detectives into cynical antiheroes. And Detective Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson) has certainly had it, opting for an isolated life until he’s baited out of retirement by Brady Hartsfield’s (Penny Dreadful‘s Harry Treadaway) lurid antics and threats to kill innocent lives.

First shared by the author, the chilling trailer sets up the dangerous game of cat and mouse between the hardened detective and the demented psychopath.

The extended look also offers a peek at the rest of the cast, which includes Moonlight‘s Jharrel Jerome as Jerome Robinson, UnREAL breakout Breeda Wool as Lou Linklatter, Ann Cusack as Olivia Trelawney, Mary-Louise Parker as Janey Patterson and Holland Taylor as Ida Silver.

Mr. Mercedes, which is the first in series of novels about Det. Hodges, was adapted by David E. Kelley. The longtime TV writer, who’s fresh off hit adaptation of Big Little Lies, serves as executive producer alongside Under the Dome and Lost director Jack Bender, who also helms multiple episodes.

The new series is just one of many King adaptations taking over our screens this summer. First up is Spike’s take on The Mist, one of ET’s can’t-miss shows of the summer, and later comes the long-awaited film adaptation of The Dark Tower starring Idris Elba, a remake of It and Netflix’s take on Gerald’s Game. Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams is working with Hulu on a TV adaptation of Castle Rock, which will star Andre Holland and Sissy Spacek.

Mr. Mercedes premieres Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the Audience Network (exclusively available through DirecTV). In the meantime, watch ET’s exclusive closer looks at Hodges and Hartsfield below.
